Sultry Socks: Socky Update

Sultry Socks is walking to the finish line!

This Thursday shall be a Sultry Sock celebration! Let the sock hop dance party lift your spirits and get you dancing with socks!!

Sultry Socks is nearly complete and with that, it’s time for a celebration! This Thursday there will be a virtual sock hop livestream to celebrate the magazine’s completion. It has been an adventure since the first Fanboy Magazine project and now the next instalment, Sultry Socks, is soon to be unveiled. From a proof of concept photoshoots of my own sock collection, to finally sharing a sock picture recruitment video at Trial Runners; it has been a fun time bringing fun to socks.

People seem to act like getting socks for a holiday as an adult is lame, but it’s all about the thought and presentation. A good pair of socks can make you feel comfy, or powerful, or fun and sexy! If it’s just black socks it may seem boring, but add cats or a nice texture and you’re excited. There is plenty of wonder and joy to be had in playing with the mundane and having fun. Throw an odd sock on your hand and yap with it can be freeing and fun.

Where It Began

While this began as an adventure to explore the ideas of obscuring and the power of imagination in sexual media, it once again became so much more. This whole project began from criticisms of the air of seriousness and taboo around fetish; by documenting air ventilation fans and other fans in the manner of pin ups or dirty mags. The response was actually one of humour at how goofy it was to see images of folding fans and ceiling fans with the phrasing of sexual content. Ultimately, it became absurd to see what people like and treat so secretive, abstracted to show how harmless, light hearted and fun open discussions can be.

Sultry Socks was created with a similar mindset, one of exploring the appeal of potential image rather than object of desire. Feet have become a huge talking point and market, much memed upon, but the notion of showing versus obscuring is less explored. The imaged form is more appealing than the actual article at times, hence the enjoyment of lingerie. At the end, Sultry Socks is rather a playful adventure or image crafting to bring socks to life, give them personalities and exploring visual culture. There can still be an air of the original exploration of obscuring, however it was too much fun crafting the imagery being playful with the edits to see them as anything but fun as the creator.

Acknowledgements of Thanks

The spirit and energy of the project and its participants was simply one of excitement and playfulness; to see and create impromptu sock photos and have fun. It was a great adventure, and I’m excited to share this magazine sockful of images with everyone! Thank you for your energy, thanks for all the participation and thanks for reminding me of the joy to be had in making art. I often take my skills for granted and don’t think about the thinking that takes black socks and pants, and creates an exciting image from them in a few minutes. It was even more fun to pay with how to edit the photos and add even more personality.

Happy Socky Update, Prepare for a Socky Thursday!!
