48 Hour Beat Drop Challenge!
The Challenge is now underway!
The Two Part Challenge
Part 1: (Music)
You get 48 hours to create a song based on a randomized prompt! Your song must make use of one audio sampling of something not yet music(talking, a sound effect, foley) sourced from recording something for yourself, from your video collection, or something uploaded to youtube within the 48 hours. By the end of the 48 hours you will have your entire song completed and mixed or mastered to completion!
Part 2: (Video)
This part is now time for the visual elements where you then have until the 30th of November to create a music video for your song! Not everyone is going to draw all the art and film a big musical number so calm your fears you can have some rest. You can work with other people or participants to create your music videos, or even offer your song up to your community to make a music video. If you want to offer up to everyone free rein to create a music video from your song and see what people make, there will be a way for you to indicate that as well. You get to choose what video you wish to share as the finished project and there will be a separate collection for fan projects to be shared for everyone to see those too! Remember to make an album cover following the template you can use your profile picture or branding and have it as simple or complex as you want!
When?
The open call for participants begins October 27th to allow for everyone to plan ahead and schedule for the challenge. The 48 hour battle starts November 16th to the end of day November 17th(a weekend NA timezones). International timezones will be considered when finalizing the start and end times. You may propose an alternate 48 Hour period if you are unavailable at that time in the registration form.
Why?
You’ll never learn unless you practice the skill you want to learn! I’ve basically never done this before and while somewhat scuffed I’ve already learned so much. I refuse to take things easy and the singing audio is from me fully singing while dancing dressed as a pirate in real time(it took 3 hours to get the lyrics right so the timing fell apart ooof). I record most videos in long takes and make my life difficult, still you learn so much and I’m happy to play a fool cause I love campy songs and singing the Globglogabgalab!
How or Where?
To Review the music side of the challenge: this is similar to a 48 hour film challenge, something normally done by moving about to film and collect your footage for production. That is not always very feasible, so you are free to go and record something, sample from your own collections of recordings or source from something uploaded on youtube during the 48 hour challenge.
You get to work wherever you are comfortable and share your project to wherever you want it’s yours. We ask that you share the link to wherever you have uploaded it publicly so everyone can see the finished projects on the 30th of November. The song audio is required to confirm the completion of the challenge and make sure the song is the same for the music video and create a teaser showcase of the songs for the music video release day! The teaser compilation will be shared with everyone so we can all get hyped for the reveal!
The challenge will be showcased with a hashtag and a directory page sharing links to all the final pieces and fan projects so we can all enjoy the amazing projects!
Rules
- Simply, there is no room for hate speech, harassment, discrimination, racism, inciting violence, or any form of bad attitude and ill will.
- You can swear, you can be somewhat vulgar, so long as you are not antagonizing and attacking or down putting others. If it is not in the spirit of fun and is instead just mean then make something else.
- List your sources and fill out your credits properly namely, what you sampled and who helped with the project
- Ai policy: you can use vo-coding or speech synthesizers so long as it is not to impersonate someone else’s likeness and is used to in good faith. Empowering not disempowering, so if you can create your song your way with vocaliod Hatsune Miku then that’s cool. If you want a singer and you do not sing yourself you can always chat up some local vocalists, or friends and see if they want to join in. What is not allowed is using ai to mimic the voice of a public figure or pop culture character for your song. There will be a way to disclose if you are not the vocalist from your song and credit the singer or vocal software(this goes in the credits section).
- Follow TOS for platforms when sharing your song and video
Disclaimer
I’m not a lawyer, music licensing is often messy and it is good to air on the side of caution. You are responsible for your creations and interactions for use of sampling. The purpose of the sampling is not to remix songs that already exist, instead the purpose is to take audio elements that are not music and create music from it. Transformation is the key, fair use relates to education, artistic and critique purposes and even then it can be difficult. You are solely responsible for your song and have all authority over what you wish to do or how you wish to share it.
Prize? The End?
There is not a challenge designed to have an overall winner, nor a fixed prize from the event. If you would like to have a little commemorative button or artwork digital or physical(we got you Vtuber’s and faceless creators) I’m happy to share and make you something just let me know! At the end of this challenge you will have been on quite the adventure, creating a musically adventurous song, packaged with a music video and an album cover! On the 30th there will be a drop in stream where you can talk about your creation and celebrate and chat with everyone!
